Board of Trustees Information

The Chilton ISD Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected to serve, without compensation, for four-year terms and represent the entire school district. Elections are held in November of even-numbered years. All Chilton ISD residents who meet eligibility requirements as specified in Board Policy BBA (Legal) and Tex. Elec. Code § 141.001; Tex. Educ. Code § 11.066 may run for a position. Four trustee positions will be up for election on November 3, 2020. Eligible residents, residing within district boundaries considering running for school board can access a free online training course through the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) which explains the roles and responsibilities of the position. The Texas Election Code designates the Secretary of State as the chief election officer of the State of Texas. In order to provide information on the electoral process to all Texans, the office has prepared a guide with information regarding the election process.

Requirements for Filing for Candidacy

Per BBA (Legal) and Election Code 31.0021, 141.031, .039:

A candidate application for a place on the ballot must:

Be in writing;
Be signed and sworn to before a person authorized to administer an oath in this state by the candidate and indicate the date that the candidate swears to the application;
Be timely filed with the appropriate authority; and
Include all statutorily required information, including:
The candidate’s name, date of birth, and occupation;
The candidate’s residence address or the address at which the candidate receives mail with a description of the location of the candidate’s residence;
The candidate’s length of continuous residence in Texas and in the District (and single member district, if applicable) as of the date the candidate swears to the application;
If available, a public mailing and email address at which the candidate receives correspondence relating to the candidate’s campaign;
The office sought, including any place or other distinguishing number and an indication of whether the office sought is for a full or unexpired term;
Statements that the candidate is a U.S. citizen; has not been determined by a court to be mentally incapacitated; has not been convicted of a felony; is aware of the nepotism law; and swears an oath to support and defend the U.S. and Texas Constitutions and laws

Eligibility requirements, per BBA (Legal):

To be eligible to be a candidate for, or elected or appointed to, the office of school board member, a person must:

Be a United States citizen.
Be 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election or on the date of appointment, as applicable.
Have not been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote.
Have not been finally convicted of a felony from which the person has not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities.
Have resided continuously in the state for 12 months and in the territory from which the office is elected for six months immediately preceding the following date:
For an independent candidate, the date of the regular filing deadline for a candidate's application for a place on the ballot.
For a write-in candidate, the date of the election at which the candidate's name is written in.
For an appointee to an office, the date the appointment is made.
Be registered to vote in the territory from which the office is elected on the date described at item 5, above.

A person may not be elected trustee of an independent school district unless the person is a qualified voter. Education Code 11.061(b) defines “Qualified voter” as a person who:

Is 18 years of age or older;
Is a United States citizen;
Has not been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote;
Has not been finally convicted of a felony [see also Atty. Gen. Op. LO 96-114 (1996) (concluding that caveat at Election Code 11.002 does not mitigate blanket prohibition in Election Code 141.001, above at Eligibility)];
Is a resident of this state; and
Is a registered voter.

Ineligibility - A person is ineligible to serve as a member of the board of a district if the person has been convicted of an offense under Penal Code 43.02(b) (regarding prostitution). Education Code 11.066

A packet with the application forms and other important information can be picked up beginning on July 20, 2020, at the Chilton ISD Superintendent’s office, 905 Durango Ave, Chilton Texas. They can also be accessed with the attached links.

Completed forms must be filed by the deadline of August 17, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. at the Chilton ISD Administration office. All applications filed and information contained within those applications becomes public records and open to inspection upon request.
